Delmarva Low Impact Tourism Experiences Promotes Ecotourism On The Eastern Shore
Jim Rapp is the executive director of Delmarva Low Impact Tourism Experiences (DLITE), a long time member of the Skipjack network. Before he took this job in 2007, he ran the Salisbury Zoo, and was a long time supporter of DLITE. Watch the video to hear why he is a fanatic about travel on Delmarva.
Recent projects of DLITE include joining others in the successful campaign to make Smith Island Cakes the official state dessert of Maryland, and the creation of a new paddling guide for the island. Long term projects include the Delmarva Birding Weekend which is held the last weekend in April every year. Also, DLITE helped develop the Great Delmarva Biking Map, and the Delmarva Bird watching Guide. Both are available through the DLITE website.
Skipjack and the Rural Development Center has been a longtime proponent of the work DLITE does. The RDC has provided funding and a network of support for DLITE. As part of his work with DLITE Jim assists the Hazel Foundation with the management of the Hazel Outdoor Discovery Center in Eden Maryland which has nature trails and facilities offered for gatherings or retreats.
DLITE also organizes courses in local nature and heritage guiding. DLITE is especially proud of its work with kids like the annual Great Worcester Herp Search, and the Coastal Stewards Program which gets young people involved in local conservation projects. DILITE also assists local business and nonprofits in the eco-tourism business.
Jim recommends business people learn everything they can about other tourist attractions, parks, and historic sites in the area. This can be invaluable when setting up a company focused on the "green" traveler. Jim has lots of suggestions for travelers looking for eco-friendly experiences on Delmarva. Naturally he advocates the idea of "leave only your footprints." Watch the video for his recommendations.
