Growing The Lower Shore Economy
Jerry Redden has been hard at work helping to grow the economy of the Lower Shore for many years as the director of Economic Development in Worcester County, and through his work with the Rural Development Center and now the Maryland Hawk Corporation.
While talking with local middle school students Jerry has heard about increased interest engineering courses at the new Worcester County Technical School. This enthusiasm came in part from classmates of one student participating in the Reach For The Stars Camp.
Education is one pathway to growing our economy another is helping businesses.
The next major initiative is encouraging new energy technologies on the Lower Shore. Jerry says that thanks to the Maryland legislature small businesses can now take advantage of net metering. This allows them to produce their own energy through wind and solar applications - and sell what they do not use back to power companies. Finance packages are being developed to assist businesses like poultry farmers make this happen.
Creating training programs for Lower Shore workers at all stages of employment is another requirement for economic development. But attracting investment in local area business is critical.
