LATCOOP Cooperative, Inc.
Miguel Gutierrez is the general coordinator of Latcoop Cooperative Incorporated, a cooperative of Hispanic shops and restaurants on Delmarva. Latcoop is aimed at delivering products and services for the Latino community here on the Shore. Latcoop has member businesses in all three states on the Peninsula.
A commercial space in Dagsboro Delaware has been established as their base of operations and wholesale business.
Latcoop has worked closely with the Rural Development Center at University of Maryland Eastern Shore to secure the support of the US Department of Agriculture as well as the Mexican Agriculture agencies
SAGARPA, and FIRCO.
Finding wholesale products and keeping prices down for a community hard hit by unemployment has been difficult in this economy. Forming a cooperative has helped establish mutually beneficial partnerships with businesses in Mexico. This way the cooperative supports both Latino's here as well as their native communities.
Miguel moved to this area over twenty years ago working in a variety of jobs until he earned enough money to start his own business Fiesta Mex - a Latino grocery store and restaurant in Salisbury, Maryland. He has good advice for others who want to start their own business. And, even though these have been difficult times Miguel is optimistic.
