Meet Lisa Challenger - Director of Worcester County Tourism
Worcester County Tourism is a county agency which promotes local destinations and travel industry - and is a member of the Skipjack network. Tourism if vital to the economy of the Lower Eastern Shore so it has been an important priority of Skipjack and the Rural Development Center at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Lisa has been living in the area since 1987 and she loves her job. Watch the video to hear what she has to say.
Worcester County Tourism has worked with the Rural Development center and Skipjack to support and promote the arts in this area.
They have also partnered with Delmarva LITE to create such successful online promotions as Wilds of Worcester and Host Our Coast. Host Our Cost 2 will be open for entries in February 2010. Lucky winners will spend the summer on Delmarva's coast blogging about their experiences. Lisa says they will also be modernizing the View trail 100 to reflect the way cyclists use trails now.
Visitors to our area are definitely looking for deals but Lisa says a lot of travelers may be suffering from what some are calling "frugality fatigue" and they are ready to spend again. One of the bigger trends in tourism is eco-travel.
New businesses which Lisa suggests are a good fit for the area include anything to do with the outdoors such as paddle board and kayaking outfitters, or microbrew pubs and wineries. Worcester County now has a new winery, Cosa Ventosa in Whaleyville which is now listed on the Chesapeake Winery Trail.
Worcester County Tourism is available to help anyone looking to start or improve their tourism related business.
