Small Farm Outreach Initiative
The mission of the Small Farm Outreach Initiative at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore is to provide education, training, and programs for small farmers here on the Delmarva Peninsula. The program concentrates mostly on the Lower Shore in Maryland and Virginia, but reaches into the upper shore and across the bay. Program director, Berran Rogers, Jr. grew up on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Recent projects include providing exposure to the latest trends in small farm practices. Specialty crops or niche markets, such as wineries and pumpkins, are common among small farmers. Agri-tainment is also popular. This includes corn mazes, and petting zoo's. A recent farm tour of some successful ventures using these marketing methods provided hands on demonstrations.

The program is a direct link to government programs and to educational materials about all aspects of the business of farming. In a sign of the economic times, more and more people are expressing an interest in farming - often as a part time supplement to full time employment.

The Rural Development Center is an enthusiastic supporter of Small Farm Outreach. They and number of other agencies have provided support for a variety of initiatives including their annual Small Farm Conference. This years event will be November 5-6 at UMES. Scholarship aid is available to the conference which also serves as an opportunity for the university's agriculture students to volunteer and learn as well.

Conservation easements, new energy incentives, and a variety of other programs are part of the program's versatile tool box and their responsive approach to helping the small farmer.
