The Delmarva Discovery Center
The Delmarva Discovery Center is the Lower Shore's newest museum and one of the pride and joys of Pocomoke City. It showcases the region's cultural and environmental heritage.
Brian Garrett is the Executive Director. Brian Garrett has roots here on the eastern shore, moving back to the area just a few years ago. His volunteer efforts with the museum's developers evolved into full time work which he is passionate about.
Brian explains that the Delmarva Discovery Center is a nature heritage museum located on the beautiful Pocomoke River. They cover the history ranging from Native Americans to 19th century ship building industry, the hunting and fishing practices, to present day ecology. In the short time it has been around, the museum has already participated in environmental studies and continues to test the water quality of the river just outside its doors.
The Discovery Center's development began about a decade ago as a way to celebrate the area's heritage and bring economic development to Pocomoke City. The building began as a car dealership. After being empty for several decades, a group of volunteers envisioned a cultural center to help bring visitors to Pocomoke City. The museum is a private nonprofit which has seen great support from area community organizations, including the Rural Development Center.
The museum offers a rich variety of educational opportunities for people of all ages, including speakers, school field trips, environmental stewardship projects and more. The Discovery Center continues to develop current and new exhibits as well as special family oriented weekend and summer programs.
They have helped create a walking tour of the town, and a nature walk at the park across the street. They have a special relationship with the Virginia Space Academy, and the Wallops Visitor Center Center in nearby Virginia. They hosted a special exhibit celebrating the 65th anniversary of the NASA complex, in the summer of 2010
At the heart of the museum is the Pocomoke River itself, which touches all three states on Delmarva. Stewardship education about the river and its tributary streams and cypress swamps is an important mission of the Discovery Center.
There are a variety of volunteer opportunities, from work behind the scenes caring for the aquariums, to docent, and gift shop positions. If you would like to find out more please visit the links below.
