The Hawk Children’s Fund
The Hawk Children's Fund is a student run charity created and managed by seniors at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Rick Gormley serves as faculty advisor for this project.
Rick has been at UMES for 26 years after a career in corporate restaurant management with TGI Fridays and the Marriot Corporation.
The Hotel & Restaurant Management program has been part of the UMES curriculum since 1979. Annual events are part of a hands on approach to learning about business management.
The Rural Development Center, which happens to be just down the hall in the Henson Center building, helped secure the funding to get this project started and keep it moving. The Hawk Corporation was formed by UMES and the Rural Development Center to develop funding for projects like this.
There has been equal support from the local communtiy who has made generous donations on their own and through univeristy sponsored activities. Together students, faculty, and local volunteers provide the entertainment.
There is a full service 26 bed hotel in the Henson Center run by former graduates and staffed mostly by students.
Description of hands on approach and how it helps students to be more successful.
In this program the students agree on the goals and grading criteria at the beginning of the course . Rick says that students interested taking in the Hotel Restaurant Management program should enjoy working with people, be comfortable with basic business math, and be ready to develop a positve mature work ethic.
For those who might want to create a similar project for students Rick has this to say: Let go of expectations. He has learned to empowere the students and let them be resposnible for the visioning and accountability.
